Cold slows everything down โ and "dry" and "cured" are not the same thing, which is where most floor damage happens.
Dry vs. Cured: The Difference That Ruins Floors
Epoxy and polyaspartic do not dry the way paint dries โ they cure. Drying is evaporation; curing is a chemical reaction in which resin and hardener cross-link into a solid plastic. A floor can feel hard underfoot at 24 hours while only a fraction of that cross-linking is complete. The surface is solid; the chemistry is not finished. Park a car, drag a toolbox, or set a point load on a floor that is dry-but-not-cured and you can imprint or gouge a surface that would have shrugged it off four days later. Almost every "my new floor got damaged" call we receive traces back to this gap.

Polyaspartic Timeline: Why We Install It Most
Most of the floors we install across the GTA finish with a polyaspartic topcoat โ and on many projects the entire system is polyaspartic. The reason is the cure profile. Polyaspartic is an aliphatic polyurea: it cross-links far faster than epoxy and keeps curing at temperatures where epoxy simply stops.

This is why a one-day garage install is possible at all: we grind and repair in the morning, apply the base and flake broadcast midday, topcoat in the afternoon, and the homeowner walks on the floor the next morning. What Cold Weather Does to Cure Times in Ontario
Cure speed roughly halves for every 10ยฐC drop. An epoxy that cures in 7 days at 20ยฐC can take 10โ14 days at 10ยฐC, and below about 10ยฐC most standard epoxies stall โ the reaction slows so much that the floor may never reach full hardness. This matters enormously in an unheated Ontario garage in March. Polyaspartic is the exception: formulations we use cure reliably down to -10ยฐC, with timelines stretching only modestly. If an installer proposes coating an unheated space with standard epoxy in cold weather, that floor is being set up to fail; the honest options are heating the space for a week or switching chemistry to polyaspartic.

Can You Speed Up Epoxy Curing?
Within limits. Keeping the space at 20โ25ยฐC is the single biggest accelerator โ in winter we heat garages during and after installation for exactly this reason. Gentle air movement helps the surface stage. What you should not do is aim heaters directly at the floor (uneven cure, possible discolouration) or use products with "accelerators" hand-mixed on site beyond manufacturer specs (brittleness, amber shift). If speed is the priority, the correct lever is chemistry โ specify polyaspartic โ not pushing epoxy faster than it wants to go.
Cure-Time Mistakes We See Most Often
- 01Parking at 48 hours because the floor "feels hard." Hot tires on 70%-cured epoxy leave permanent imprints. Wait for 72.
- 02Letting pets onto the floor day one. Claws scratch uncured surfaces easily, and curing resins can irritate paws. Give it 48 hours.
- 03Washing with degreaser in week one. Chemical resistance is the last property to develop. Water only until day 7.
- 04Moving the fridge or toolbox back on day two by dragging it. Point loads and dragging are the harshest test of a young floor. Lift or wait.
- 05Coating an unheated space in winter with standard epoxy. The floor stalls mid-cure and never reaches spec. Use polyaspartic or heat the space.
